Gas Saving Tips: Windows up or down? Part 1

Gas prices are showing a downward trend which is sure to have many Americans leaping for joy, I know I have been.   However, does this mean that we should throw off the shackles that bind when it comes to restricting how we drive?  No, not by a long shot.   Some folks on the West Coast are still shelling out $4 or more per gallon on regular unleaded gasoline, while people on the East Coast are paying between $3.74-$3.99 per gallon of regular unleaded gas.

Many average and poor Americans are making wise choices to not only save on gas by using gas rebate cards or gas reward cards, but they are also making small changes in their driving habits.  Does it matter if windows are up or down when it comes to saving gas?  Yes, but it depends on how fast you are going.

One small change that I encourage others to implement is to drive with your windows rolled down when driving speeds of 44 miles per hour or less because it will help make your care more fuel efficient — which means filling up less.

The show Mythbusters did an experiment to determine whether driving with windows up or down made a difference when it came to fuel efficiency.  The test concluded that driving with windows down at speeds of 44 mph or less would extend the life of gasoline.  However, acquiring facts from more than one source is always a smart decision and in this case, there is backup.  Consumer Reports also put this theory to the test and came up with the same conclusions.

Ensuring the longevity of gasoline is an important factor when it comes to stretching those gas dollars.  If you live in an area with sweltering heat and humidity and cannot fathom driving with your windows down under such conditions, try turning down your A/C a couple notches.

Tomorrow…how driving with your A/C on when driving 45 mph or above will help you save on gas.
